Refresh is an interactive website that seeks to reconsider the term gamer and redefine play. If more women identified as gamers, they would be more likely to participate in the gaming and esports industries.
The barrier it aims to address is the accessibility of the gaming and esports industry to women and other marginalized genders because of the perception of the gamer identity itself. For example, when applying to job in this industry, job description or application may include “bonus if you’re a gamer” line. People who already see themselves as gamers are more likely to apply in this situation because they identify with that term, where people who do not identify with this may not apply at all.
By promoting and including casual games within our definition of play, we can begin to overcome this identity barrier and some of the negative connotations associated with the term “gamer,” therefore making the gaming and esports industry more accessible.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
We interviewed individuals, built out personas, and conducted a survey of 280+ participants through google forms. The questions aimed to gather more data on the type of people who either play games, watch games, or talk about games, and to get more complete picture of the types of people who engage with gaming/gaming content.
